Hill walking has formed my over-riding interest as far as pure Landscape is concerned.
My aim is to try and show my response to the world round me - in a simple and direct way.
By doing more and more walking on the Island I found my awareness of the changing seasons heightened.
This is my love, to be out in the landscape.
Painting is observation and understanding and to me you have to be out in it to understand it.
This does not mean just being out on good days, but in all weathers.
Even on a bad day the sun could break through, if Just for a short time, and you won't see it tucked up in
front of the fire.
Days with the sun breaking through racing clouds, an approaching shower or a single tree
illuminated in an otherwise overcast landscape.
This is the subject I am searching for. For me Painting and Walking have become bound together,
one now feeds the other.
I would like to think I am able to show more than just a photographic representation.
I'm trying to give my work an atmosphere and sensation gained by personal experience. To try to show
others the world as I see it. I think of a painting as team work between the artist and the viewer.
It's the job of the artist to give just enough information, so the viewer can have a personal input
in to the work.
If you like to count blades of grass or nuts and bolts, then my work is not for you.
I on the other hand you like drama, light and movement - then you may like what I do.
No matter what the subject - Landscape - Seascape - Motorcycle - the real subject is light.
The message "I liked this and thought you might like to see it too".
It's that simple. A chance to see the world through the eyes of another.
I know the hills and coast of Island well.
I think it's an important part of human contentment to feel a belonging to the land, a sense of place.
I know when I'm out in the hills I feel content, and count myself very fortunate to have been born in
such a place. If all that ever happens to me is that I can continue to paint, and live in this lovely island;
I will count my self a lucky man.
